Find out more about how we test. If you're looking for a laptop with the processing power necessary to animate like Pixar or design like Jony Ive, you don't have to settle for a workstation that looks like a workstation. The stylish HP ZBook Studio G3 starting at $1,999; tested at $3,039 is light enough that it won't hurt your back, and it's armed with an Intel Xeon processor and Nvidia Quadro graphics that provide blazing-fast performance. This notebook provides plenty of power and portability for the most-demanding users, but we wish its display were the subtle dimples on the ZBook Studio G3's lid to the diamond-cut edge on its deck, this workstation shows that you don't need to sacrifice style for performance. The notebook's aluminum-and-magnesium chassis has a solid build quality, and the textured geometric patterns on its underside make it easy to HP ZBook Studio G3 weighed pounds and measured inches thick, making it lighter and thinner than the Lenovo ThinkPad P70 pounds, inches thick and similar to the Apple MacBook Pro with Retina display pounds, inches thick and the Dell Precision 5510 pounds, inches thick. It takes a lot of energy to power a 4K display and an Intel Xeon processor, so it's noteworthy that HP managed to condense the ZBook's 150-watt power brick to a block 0`.9 pounds w/ cord that measures 6 x x inches. The ThinkPad P70's 230-watt brick is bulkier, weighing pounds and measuring x x 1 ZBook Studio G3 has passed 15 MIL-SPEC-810G tests, the durability standards used to test military equipment ruggedness. That means the workstation should survive drops, vibrations, shock, extremely hot and cold temperatures, and rainy and dusty departments should be happy to hear that the ZBook Studio G3 has an ample array of security measures. This includes a TPM certified security chip, an optional fingerprint reader $24 and BIOS controls for a power-on and TouchpadThe ZBook Studio's keys have an acceptable millimeters of travel and require 59 grams of force to actuate. We prefer laptop keys that have between and 2 mm of travel and require at least 60 grams of force. On the typing test, I click-clacked my way to 74 words per minute with 97 percent accuracy, which is below my typical 80 wpm and 99 ZBook Studio G3 has a x buttonless touchpad that accurately tracked my fingers as I navigated around the desktop. There was a good feel to each click, but to make it register three-finger swipe gestures, I had to open the Alps touchpad settings menu and switch from GlidePoint to I watched the 4K version of Interstellar on the HP ZBook Studio G3's 3840 x 2160 display, I frequently noticed that images appeared too dark. From a field of corn to a spaceship's cockpit, the screen turned normally well-lit shots into shadowy scenes. If a scene was well lit, the ZBook did a fantastic job with color, rendering crisp whites on a moon's surface and the warm oranges of a roaring to our colorimeter, the ZBook's display can produce percent of the sRGB color gamut, which is a wider range than we found on the 15-inch MacBook Pro 86 percent, the ThinkPad P70 percent and the average for desktop-replacement notebooks percent. The Precision 5510 177 percent has a greater range of ZBook Studio G3's panel did not earn high marks for color accuracy, scoring in the Delta-E test where the best scores are close to zero. That's worse than the MacBook Pro the ThinkPad P70 and the average for desktop-replacement notebooks but better than the Precision 5510 Best Ultrabooks Thin-and-Light Windows LaptopsUnfortunately, the ZBook Studio G3's screen produced only 252 nits of brightness, which is dimmer than the ThinkPad P70 277 nits, the Precision 5510 322 nits, the MacBook Pro 303 nits and the average for desktop-replacement notebooks 293 nits. Possibly due to its low brightness numbers, the screen offers narrow viewing angles, with colors fading at 40 degrees to the left or ZBook Studio G3's Bang & Olufsen-tuned speakers accurately reproduced The Weeknd's sweet high notes in "Nocturnal," as well as the cornucopia of midrange percussion instruments in Simon and Garfunkel's "Cecilia." I was only disappointed with its distant and limited bass, which stood out when I listened to Jay Z and Kanye West's "No Church in The Wild."Enabled by default, the preloaded Bang & Olufsen software enhances the quality of the output and allows you to choose among Music, Voice and Movie modes. When on its default settings, the ZBook had enough volume to fill a small conference room, but when I disabled the software, the levels and WebcamYou'll find the ZBook's Ethernet port, lock slot and two of the ZBook Studio G3's USB ports on its left side. The notebook's two Thunderbolt ports, HDMI port, headphone jack and third USB port sit on its right side. The notebook's fingerprint reader lives under the lower-right corner of its ZBook Studio G3 has a webcam that shot noisy but color-accurate selfies in our office. The reds and blues of my shirt and the red of our Purch wall registered correctly, but the photos captured little an Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 processor, 32GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, the HP ZBook Studio G3 is one of the fastest laptops we've tested. The notebook didn't stutter as I moved between a race in Asphalt 8, two dozen Chrome tabs, and simultaneous audio and HD video streams. The ZBook refused to stumble as I added an audio recording in Voice Recorder and a full system scan in Windows Defender to the ZBook Studio earned a strong Geekbench 3 score of 14,276, which beats the desktop-replacement average 12,541 and the Intel Xeon E3-150M-v5-powered ThinkPad P70 13,158. The Intel Core i7-4870HQ-powered MacBook Pro 14,423 and the Xeon E3-150M-v5-powered Precision 5510 14,316 earned slightly better notebook's 512GB SSD hard drive is fast, but it's not the best in its class. It took the notebook 10 seconds to duplicate of mixed media files, for a speed of 509 MBps. The average desktop-replacement laptop's hard drive 524 MBps and the 512GB solid-state drives in the MacBook Pro, Precision 5510 and ThinkPad P70 all copied files at faster Best HP LaptopsThe ZBook Studio outperformed its competition in the OpenOffice macro test, which matches 20,000 names and addresses, with a time of 3 minutes and 23 seconds. That's faster than the MacBook Pro, the Precision 5510 and the average for desktop-replacement notebooks, and tied with the ThinkPad for demanding professional use cases such as CAS computer assisted design or PLM product lifecycle management, the ZBook Studio G3's 4GB Nvidia Quadro M1000M GPU scored a strong 117,745 on 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited, a synthetic graphics test. That score is well-above the desktop replacement category average 113,088 and about on par with the Dell Precision 5510 117,636. The Lenovo ThinkPad P70's Quadro M4000M GPU got a stronger score of 144, its not designed for games, the ZBook ran the processor-taxing Metro Last Light set to low graphics and 1080p resolution at an acceptable 59 frames per second 30 fps is our standard for smooth gaming. However, the frame rate shot down to 14 fps when we changed the graphics setting to high-quality. The more-powerful ThinkPad P70 ran Metro Last Light at 1080p on high at an acceptable 32 fps, while the 2GB Nvidia Quadro M1000M-powered Precision 5510 also mustered just 14 downside to the ZBook Studio's mighty performance is that the notebook tends to run hot. After we streamed 15 minutes of HD full-screen video on the ZBook Studio, its underside spiked a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which is above our 95-degree comfort threshold. Its touchpad 80 degrees and keyboard 85 degrees stayed LifeThe ZBook Studio G3 is so light that we wish it lasted longer on a charge. The notebook endured for 5 hours and 8 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test constant Web browsing at 100 nits of brightness - not as long as the Precision 5510 534 and the ThinkPad P70 553, and well short of the 15-inch MacBook Pro 908. This takes away from the ZBook Studio's portability, but it's still a longer time than the average for desktop-replacement notebooks 424.MORE Laptops with the Longest Battery LifeSoftware and WarrantyThankfully, this workstation has little preloaded bloatware. Our customized test model costs $2,999 and has an Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 processor, 32GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, a fingerprint reader and a 4K ZBook Studio G3s with Core i7 processors start at $2,073, and you can upgrade the display from 1080p to 4K for $275 and add a fingerprint reader for $24. Our HP ZBook Studio G3 came running Windows 10, but you can opt for it to ship with Windows 7 for LineThe ZBook Studio G3 is a beautiful workhorse that demanding creative pros will love. Our configuration offered CPU performance on a par with the fastest laptops available today, and the chassis is light enough to take this machine with you. The ZBook also has the durability and security features IT departments demand. But what prevents this workstation from being an Editors' Choice pick is its relatively dim display, although it is plenty colorful. If you want to save some money and don't need the power of a Xeon processor, you can save $697 by opting for a Core i7-6700HQ CPU with integrated Intel graphics, 16GB of RAM and a 256GB you want to see your work through a better lens, consider the Dell Precision 5510, which packs similar performance and a brighter screen at the same weight, all for $400 less than our review unit. More than a simple business laptop, it features future-proof, ISV-certified components and a 4K screen so you can tackle architectural, multimedia, and scientific projects while you're on the move. It's certainly an attractive and close competitor to our top pick, the Dell Precision 15 5000 Series 55101, Base Configuration at Dell TechnologiesOpens in a new window. Design and Features The ZBook Studio G3 looks like a large-screen business laptop from a distance, though its subtle detail work lets you know it has a bit more power than PCs like the HP EliteBook Folio G1 4K UHD. The top lid has a faint pinhole pattern etched in its surface, as if it were docked like a cracker to keep it from bulging from the forces contained within. It's certainly a unique aesthetic choice. Chrome-colored outlines surrounding the touchpad and around the base accent the monochrome dark gray body. The ZBook Studio G3 measures by by inches HWD and weighs pounds. That's a bit thicker and larger overall than the Dell Precision 5510 and smaller than but the same thickness as the 2015 version of the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch with Retina Display$ at AmazonOpens in a new window. In any case, the ZBook is portable enough for most laptop bags that claim to hold 15-inch machines, and you'll have no problem toting it around your office. Like many business laptops, the ZBook has a chassis that's designed to pass MIL-STD 810G testing for durability, though it hasn't been certified as such. The 3,840-by-2,160-resolution IPS display dictates the ZBook Studio G3's dimensions. It has a large work space for your photos, scientific data, or drafting tools. The screen's 4K resolution matches that of the Dell Precison 5510, and has a lot more space than the 3K 2,880-by-1,600 display on the Lenovo ThinkPad W550s$ at AmazonOpens in a new window or the 2,880-by-1,880-resolution display on the Apple MacBook Pro. Unlike the Dell Precision 5510, the ZBook Studio has a non-touch screen with an antiglare coating. That is more traditional, but it also means that the screen isn't as bright as the Dell's, nor is it as able to cope with direct sunlight. It is sharp, though, so you can see fine detail in your pictures or drawings. A 4K HP DreamColor display is available as a no-cost option, while a full HD screen is on the base unit. The bezel around the screen is a bit thicker than the one on the Dell Precision 5510, which makes the ZBook Studio G3 look a little old-school in comparison. There's a fingerprint reader below the right side of the backlit keyboard, which you may need depending on your company's security requirements. The chiclet-style keys look somewhat small on the wide expanse of the keyboard deck, but they are easy to type on. There's no room for a numeric keypad. The one-piece touchpad is responsive to multitouch commands. Above the keyboard, you'll find an on/off switch for the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios, and a Mute button. Stereo speakers flank the keyboard, and they produce distortion-free, if unremarkable sound. The plain keyboard deck isn't as flashy as the carbon fiber one on the Dell, but it's comfortable for long typing sessions. Similar Products The bottom lid is perforated through about one-third of its surface, so cooling air can reach the heat sinks for the CPU and GPU. The grille and surrounding surfaces have a raised texture that might feel weird if you're using the ZBook on your lap. I heard the cooling fans spool up and stay on during benchmark test runs and occasionally while the ZBook was idle, so make a note of that if you require a quiet environment. There are eight Torx screws on the bottom of the laptop, so it is possible for your IT guys to replace the battery and add components, but you won't be able to swap out a discharged battery for a charged one in a conference room or on a plane. Connectivity on the ZBook is excellent, with a Kensington lock port, an Ethernet port, two USB ports, and an SD card reader on the left side; and a headset jack, one additional USB port, an HDMI jack, two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, and the power port on the right. The use of a separate power jack frees both USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports for use, compared with the HP EliteBook Folio and the new Apple MacBook Pro$ at AmazonOpens in a new window, which both lose one of the USB-C ports to the AC adapter. Wireless connections come by way of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth The system comes with 32GB of RAM and a 512GB solid-state drive SSD that HP calls its Z Turbo Drive G2. There are only two memory slots, so you'll have to swap out the existing 16GB modules if you want to bump up the RAM to the 64GB maximum. Chances are that 32GB will be enough for even the most octopus-like multitaskers and intense digital artists. There is an additional slot free for adding a second SSD, but there's no space for a drive inside the chassis. As with the battery, we'd recommend that your IT techs take care of internal upgrades on a static-electricity-free labs bench. HP protects the ZBook Studio G3 with a three-year standard warranty with on-site service. Performance The ZBook Studio G3 comes with a quad-core Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 processor and Nvidia Quadro M1000M graphics, both ISV certified, in case you have that requirement to fulfill in business contracts. The laptop performed at or close to the top of the list of recently reviewed mobile workstations on our multimedia benchmarks. Its HandBrake time 1 minute, 4 seconds and CineBench score 718 points were a bit better than the results we got for the Dell Precision 5510, and the HP was just a second behind the Dell on the Photoshop test 302. The HP ZBook 15u G2, the Lenovo ThinkPad P40 Yoga at AmazonOpens in a new window, and the ThinkPad W550s were close behind on HandBrake and Photoshop, but far behind on CineBench, due to their use of laptop-class Core i7 processors. If you need major number-crunching, such as for rendering CGI animation, a workstation-class processor like the Intel Xeon is a must. See How We Test Laptops While you wouldn't necessarily play games on a workstation, our 3D gaming tests do reflect each laptop's ability to display real-time 3D graphics. The ZBook Studio G3 edged out the Dell Precision 5510 on the 3DMark Cloud Gate 16,121 points and Fire Strike Extreme 1,661 tests. Both were far ahead of the pack on both 3DMark tests. The Studio G3 matched the Dell on the Heaven test 58 frames per second, or fps, at 1,366-by-768 resolution with graphics quality set to Medium, and 5fps on Ultra quality at native resolution and a bit ahead on the Valley test. When we reduced the resolution on the Ultra tests to 1080p, the ZBook performed quite a bit better Heaven at 20fps, Valley at 24fps. These tests tell us that the ZBook is the Dell Precision 5510's equal on 3D tasks like walking through a 3D building plan or previewing gameplay during an app's development cycle. Battery life was passable on our rundown test, at 6 hours, 4 minutes. That's almost an hour better than the Dell Precision 5510, but far behind systems like the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga P40 833 and the ThinkPad W550s 1721 with extended batteries. Yes, the HP ZBook Studio is more powerful overall and the 4K screen definitely affects battery life adversely, so keep the substantial power brick handy. Conclusion The HP ZBook Studio G3 is certainly a multimedia and mathematical powerhouse. Though it's thin and light, it is set to serve the digital photographer, video maestro, geek scientist, or master builder who needs phenomenal computing power to solve daily dilemmas. It comes equipped with the tools to finish those projects fast, with 32GB of memory, a speedy SSD, and a CPU and GPU that are ISV certified. That said, the Dell Precision 15 5000 Series matches the ZBook Studio G3 on most benchmark tests and internal components, while only coming up short on its amount of memory. It also has a brighter touch screen with a smaller bezel, which can't be upgraded after purchase. Therefore, the Dell remains our Editors' Choice for mobile workstations, but the ZBook Studio G3 is right behind in a photo finish. Like What You're Reading?
